Katsushika Hokusai "Dragon"(right) Collection of Musee des arts Asiatiques Guimet
Katsushika Hokusai "Tiger"(left) Collection of Ota Memorial Museum of Art

※Both works above are exhibited in January and February.

Musee national des arts Asiatiques-Guimet (the Guimet Museum) was established by Emile Guimet (1836-1918), the businessman. The museum incorporated to the national museum in 1928 has been assumed the role in the Asian department of Musee du Louvre (the Louvre Museum) from after 1945. The collection of the Guimet Museum is one of the best qualities in the world.

Ukiyo-e collection of the Guimet Museum, a lot of rare works, has not ever been exhibited all at once. Especially, it is a remarkable discovery in art history that “Dragon” by Katsushika Hokusai, contributed to the Guimet Museum in recent year, is the pair with “Tiger”, possession of Ota Memorial Museum of Art.

The pair of hanging scrolls was found in the process of the survey on both museum collections due to the exhibition: “Masterpieces from Ota Memorial Museum of Art” exhibited in the Guimet Museum at July and August, 2005. This is the very first time in the world that “Dragon” is unveiled to the public and exhibited as the pair with “Tiger”. This pair, depicted by Hokusai at the year of his death, is not only the masterpiece by definition but the important work which shows Hokusai’s arrival at his artistic conclusion.

In this exhibition, we exhibit about 190 well-selected masterpieces from the collection of Musee national des arts Asiatiques-Guimet. It would be the home-coming of ukiyo-e works which had gone over to France once.
