●Katsushika Hokusai “Tour of the Waterfalls in Various Provinces: Amidagaike Waterfall on the Kisokaidō Road”

●【The 1st Term: “Ever-Changing Talent”】●
Though many people might regard Hokusai as an ukiyo-e genius, his name only became famous towards the latter half of his career. His representative series “Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji” was executed when he was over 70 years old. Most Hokusai exhibitions in the past have focused mainly on his artistic career. However, this exhibition attempts to examine Hokusai’s talent in comparison to other ukiyo-e artists including his master Katsukawa Shunshō and his contemporary rivals Kitagawa Utamaro and Utagawa Hiroshige. The exhibition conveys a comprehensive picture of the ukiyo-e art scene in which Hokusai thrived.
Katsushika Hokusai (1760~1849) is known as a master ukiyo-e artist not only in Japan but also to the world. Some of his most renowned works include “Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji” and “Hokusai Manga (Hokusai’s Sketches)”. This year, we celebrate the 250th anniversary of Katsushika Hokusai’s birth by holding an exhibition on Hokusai’s diverse artistic activities. We will exhibit approximately 200 pieces of prints during the two month period divided in to two terms. The 1st term is titled “Ever-Changing Talent” and the 2nd term, “Later Years: “Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji””.

Hokusai was over 70 years old when he executed his most famous series “Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji” which includes masterpieces such as “Mild Breeze on a Fine Day” and “The Great Waves off the Coast of Kanagawa”. In the 2nd term of the exhibition, we display all prints from this series as well as another called “Tour of the Waterfalls through Various Provinces”, executed during the same period. Further, we exhibit a Nikuhitsu-ga (paintings directly drawn on a paper or cloth) titled “Tiger in the Rain” which is one of his last works. Hokusai’s works will be accompanied by Mt. Fuji scenery depicted by his rival Utagawa Hiroshige.

However, Hokusai had always continued to experiment with different genres of ukiyo-e, including Yakusha-e (portraits of kabuki actors), Bijin-ga (portrait of beautiful woman) and illustrations for picture books.
