During the Edo period, public events and
festivals were hosted almost everyday throughout the year. Though most events
such as exhibition of Buddhist images had religious backgrounds, people
regarded these events as source of entertainment. Many people visited Mt.Fuji Enoshima Island and places even
as far as Ise Jingu Shrine and Konpira temple in Sanuki to experience something
extraordinary. People’s longings for traveling were reflected in ukiyo-e
works depicting religious events. The works by Hokusai, Hiroshige, Kunisada and
others will guide you through the daily life of the Edo-period closely
connected to various beliefs.
As a special part of this exhibition, we display Japanese lanterns and
special sacred lots for you to draw. Together with the ukiyo-e works, we hope you have a better taste of the festivals and
the beliefs of the Edo period.
